Commissions

How it works & policies

Here's what happens at each step, so you know what you're getting and when.

1. Request and review

You send photos of the house and a few details. Nothing is charged and nothing is reserved yet.

I review every request myself and reply by email, usually within 2 to 3 business days. If it's a good fit, we agree on the size, price, and timing together.

2. Invoice and payment

Once we agree, I send an invoice. It's paid in full before I start drawing, by card or Apple Pay.

Shipping, if you need it, is added to the final balance at actual cost.

3. Drawing preview

Before any paint goes down, I send you a drawing preview by private link.

Most drawings need no changes at all. If yours does, this is the time to ask for anything you want added, removed, or moved. Up to two rounds of changes are included.

4. Approving the drawing

When you approve the drawing, I start painting. Approving is the go-ahead, so please only approve once you're happy with it.

5. Painting and timing

Timely replies help keep your painting moving. If I'm waiting on an answer, I may work on another commission in the meantime, which can shift your completion date.

Please check your spam or promotions folder for emails from johnny@johnnymillspaints.com.

6. My interpretation of your house

Each painting is my hand-painted interpretation of your house, not a photograph. I follow the approved drawing closely and work hard to honor what you asked for.

Watercolor has a life of its own, though. Color, light, trees, and small details will be loose and painterly rather than exact, and some things may be simplified. That's part of what makes it an original.

7. Final painting

When it's finished, I share a photo so you can see it before pickup, delivery, or shipping.

8. Pickup, delivery, and shipping

Pickup or hand delivery in Indianapolis is free. Anywhere else, I ship with insurance at actual cost.

9. Cards and prints

Cards and prints of your painting are optional. You'll see the options once it's finished, or you can ask for them on your invoice.

10. Cancellations and refunds

Before you approve the drawing, you can cancel for a full refund. That includes if we've made changes and the drawing still isn't right for you.

After you approve the drawing, painting begins and the commission can't be refunded.

11. Photos and privacy

I may share the finished painting on my website or Instagram. I never show your address, street name, or house number publicly.
